Florida Work Experience Program (FWEP)

The Florida Work Experience Program — what is it all about?

The program gives college students the real-world work experience most employers require, and a paycheck, too. It is intended for students in career areas where their degree or certificate requires work experience. Employers benefit from the opportunity to train workers on the job while getting some help in paying their wage.

How are students’ wages paid?

The employer will pay the students for the work they perform and then invoice the College for 70 percent of those wages. The employer determines the number of hours worked each week and the hourly pay.

How long does the work experience last?

The duration of training on the job can vary and is set by the employer and the FWEP project coordinator.

What must an employer do to participate?

Employers work with the FWEP project coordinator at Florida State College at Jacksonville to supervise the student on the job site and complete the following:

  1. Memorandum of Understanding
  2. Work Authorization Form
  3. Job Description
  4. Wage Reimbursement Form

What must students do to participate?

This program is open to students pursuing Associate in Arts (A.A.) degrees, Associate in Science (A.S.) degrees, Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees, and students enrolled in eligible postsecondary career certificate programs. Students must be enrolled at least half-time. The student needs to apply and qualify for financial aid.

Are employers required to make permanent job offers when students complete the Work Experience Program?

No, the goal of the program is to give students the opportunity to gain valuable work experience. However, employers are encouraged to hire students from the program.

What if a particular student does not work out?

The student or the employer can terminate the Work Experience assignment. The termination becomes a learning experience for the student and whenever possible, Florida State College at Jacksonville will refer another student worker.
