Teacher Recertification Courses at Florida Community College

A Life of Teaching Means a Life of Learning

Are you a teacher seeking recertification? Now, you can take recertification courses the easy way — at Florida Community College. The courses are offered at five of our conveniently located campuses. Major course categories include English, math, social studies, science and education technology.

Teachers need to take six college credits for renewal or reinstatement. Consider taking courses that improve your teaching methods or content knowledge. Here are the course content areas recommended for the most common certification subject areas:

Social Sciences (Middle or High) Teachers: United States history, western civilization, European, Asian, African, Latin American, or Middle Eastern history, economics, United States government, or geography.

Math (Middle or High) Teachers: Calculus, geometry, probability, statistics, and abstract or linear algebra

English (Middle or High) Teachers: English composition and grammar beyond freshman English, speech, oral interpretation, or literature

Science (Middle or High) Teachers: Biology; Chemistry; Earth-Space Science; Physics. See the FLDOE rules for Specialization Requirements for Certification in Separate Areas of Science.

Elementary School Teachers: Music, Art, Physical Education, health and all core content: science, math, social sciences, English

All Certification Areas: All Education department coursework (course prefixes EDF, EDG, EEX, EME) can be used for all certification areas.

Professional Development

You can sometimes accomplish two tasks by taking a course that counts towards recertification and something else that is important to your professional development.

ESE Certification

  • EEX 2010 Introduction to Exceptional Student Education Counts for recertification and also prepares teachers to sit for the ESE subject area exam.

Strengthen Methods and Strategies

  • EME 2040 Introduction to Educational Technology – Useful for all teachers to stay current in this area
  • EEX 2080 Teaching the Exceptional Learner – Presents effective methods and appropriate curriculum for teaching special needs students
  • EEX 1600 Behavior Management – Teaches strong classroom management skills
  • EDF 2035 Foundations of Cooperative Learning – Counts towards recertification and offers many new strategies for teachers.
  • LIT 2930 Special Topics in Literature — Introduction to Children’s Literature – A helpful class for teachers of pre-kindergarten through middle school.

ESOL Endorsement

  • EDG 2701 Teaching Diverse Populations Meets requirements for one of the five competencies for the ESOL endorsement
