Assertiveness for Success

Presenter: Joanna Scarboro

Program Description: This workshop will teach participants about assertiveness and how it is an important skill for being successful and reducing stress. First, everyone will learn the differences between assertiveness and aggressiveness and why being assertive is in everyone’s best interest. Next, they will take a self assessment to see if they are assertive, aggressive or passive. Finally, they will learn clear language and simple skills associated with being assertive. Everyone will get to practice these new skills through fun interactive exercises.

Course Objectives and Measurable Outcomes: Each participant will learn:

  • Many different techniques for handling a variety of situations that require them to be assertive. For example, “I statements” — how using the word “I” rather than “you” can generate a better response from the other person.
  • How to handle someone who is being confrontational or aggressive.
  • How to make clear and reasonable requests of others.
  • When to make their opinions known, rather than saying nothing and risking resentment or poor decisions.

Practical Application Exercises: Assertiveness is a skill of communication. Most of the workshop will be focused on participants practicing the new techniques with others. They will be given real-world scenarios and be asked to develop a plan of action for issues they are dealing with currently.

Student Workshop Evaluation/Assessment of Learning: An evaluation will be given to all participants regarding the training outcomes and specifically how they will apply them.
