Shooting STARS
Last year’s MVP, Shari Dillet, has graduated and signed with Eckerd College of St. Petersburg, Fla. She’ll do well for her new coach and we’ll miss her “like all fire.” She’s studying Marine Biology so she can work in the water with dolphins back home in the Bahamas. Miss Dillet, thank you for your loyalty and time, and wish you the very best. Please do not forget us.
Maria Melihova — What can I say about Maria that even comes close to what she deserves? She did sign with Coach Igal Buberman at the University of North Florida, our good friend across the road. She’ll be playing Div. I tennis from now on and I hope she has the best of luck. All things considered — work habit, devotion, skills, personal appearance and pride, will to do well, and commitment to excellence — she is unsurpassed by any I have had at FCCJ and she will make us even more proud than originally thought. Go Baby!
Amelia Evans and Shayna Pierce are two that just stuck in, dug in and were here all the time. They did what they were supposed to do as well as they could and “made” our team for us. They are examples of what it takes to have and to fill out a team so you can go play. When it comes to rocket forehands and smooth, beautiful backhand shots, we’ll miss them greatly. They show that there is no one single star on a team and that it takes everyone to be successful. I hope they’ll play somewhere because they can.
This year’s new group is like “wow.” Check out these players:
Miss Alexandra Glebova comes to us from St. Petersburg, Russia. After spending many years studying under different coaches and attending academies and international play experience, Alex has decided to further her education here at FCCJ. She will major in sports therapy and is a please to have around. Welcome to Alex and thanks for choosing good ’ol FCCJ.
Last but certainly not least is the Elyse Reyes from Camden County High School (CCHS) in St. Marys, Ga. Elyse was the runner up at state tournament played in Atlanta for the District AAAAA (that's 5A). Big district Elyse, great job. She doesn’t have the hours on court that most other girls have but it doesn’t show in her play. I think she will do very well here and win a spot if she wants it. Her coaches, Danny Vonck of CCHS and Daniel Breag of St. Marys really did a good with this talented young player who is hungry for help and teaching. All the way to District 5A championships after just a few years of play? Unheard of girl, great job! Please keep it up.
The Lady Stars are preparing for a rugged 30 game season. Getting a lot of weight room work a lot of road work and a lot of court work. Seeing a lot NCAA Div. I’s and Div. II teams will be good for the girls, might not make them happy but will be good for them. We hope the injury bug doesn’t come calling on us. If it does our fine trainer Sonja Thigpen will take care of them like she has for the past four or five years.
2004–05 sophomore Viviana Rojas has finished her time at Flagler College in St. Augustine. Frida Alegard played out her time at Midwestern State U., Melanie Eng did her last 2 years at UNF, Iskra Nikolovska finished at St. Leo U., Melihova moves over to UNF, Dillet went to Eckerd College, the list goes on and on.
Hey girls, watch out for that MySpace page — be careful.
