The current location of the Kent Campus was the founding site of Florida Junior College, established in 1966 at the intersection of Roosevelt Boulevard and Park Street (where the Kent Campus now stands) used 100 World War II duplex housing units vacated by the military. Originally called the Cumberland Campus, it was renamed Kent Campus to Honor Fred H. Kent, a prominent Jacksonville attorney, who was the first Chairman of the College’s District Board of Trustees. It was rebuilt into a beautiful red brick, tree lined venue in 1979 and has retained sylvan character since that time. Florida Junior College was renamed Florida Community College at Jacksonville in 1986. The Kent Campus remains the most beautiful and serene of all Florida Community College campuses.
After the Navy vacated Cecil Field in August of 1999, the Aviation Center of Excellence was established at what is now called Cecil Center South. This was followed by an education facility at Cecil Center North, housed in temporary trailers. Subsequently, the first permanent building was constructed at Cecil North and will open in the fall of 2007 to accommodate the growing population on the westside of Jacksonville.
