Accuplacer College Placement Test (CPT)
was developed by the College Board, with the help of committees
of college professors, to provide information about your level
of skill
accomplishment in reading, English, and mathematics that is
required for success in college. By assessing your ability levels
in these areas, the Accuplacer CPT helps to determine the English,
mathematics, and reading courses most appropriate for you as you
enter Florida Community College. The Accuplacer CPT is administered
by computer.
Accuplacer CPT subtest areas.
There are three areas of the assessment, Reading
Comprehension, Sentence
Skills and Elementary
Algebra. Each exam is multiple choice and untimed. All three
areas are administered on computer. Some students may be required
to take a computerized untimed College Level Mathematics assessment
or an additional 20 minute timed reading assessment on paper.
Who may take the Accuplacer CPT?
If you are entering Florida Community
College for the first time you should take the Accuplacer CPT,
unless you have taken the ACT
or SAT
in the last two years. The following ACT
scores are accepted: 18 or higher on the reading, 17 or higher
on the English and 19 or higher on the mathematics. The following
SAT
scores are accepted: 440 on the verbal and 440 on the mathematics.
CPT, SAT and ACTl test scores expire 2 years from the test date.
In the future, if your scores expire prior to registering, you
will be required to retest (at a fee of $22) in any area (reading,
English, math) for which you have not received an A, B or C in
at least one course. Where is the CPT administered?
The CPT is administered by appointment
in the assessment
and certification center at Downtown
Campus, Kent
Campus, North
Campus, South
Campus, Deerwood Center, Cecil Center, the military bases
in Jacksonville, and Nassau Center. Individuals living outside
the First Coast area may contact Open Campus Assessment Services
at 904.632.5009 to arrange placement testing at a remote (non-FCCJ)
educational site.
May I retake the CPT?
Individuals may sit for the CPT
once without charge. After the first sitting, students may elect
to retake the CPT one more time. The retake must be done prior
to the first term of enrollment in general education courses.
The second sitting fee for all students is $22.
How long is the CPT?
The CPT is administered on computer
and is not timed. You may take as long as needed to complete the
exam. We do like to recommend you allow three hours. There are
three areas assessed: Mathematics,
English
and Reading.
Additional assessments may be required to more accurately place
you in the right courses.
Improving your scores on the CPT.
Before taking the CPT, all students
may benefit from a review. English, reading and mathematics review
materials are available in the campus bookstores, libraries and
assessment centers. Excellent internet study resources are identified
in the right column of this web page.
Getting your results.
After taking the CPT, students make
arrangements for new student orientation and advising. The orientation
session includes an introduction to Florida Community College,
and an overview of the catalog and registration processes. Students
also attend an academic advising session where test results are
discussed and first term courses are identified.
Should you be concerned about the computer?
Our computer is very "user
friendly" (meaning easy to use). You should not worry that
you will be unable to operate the computer; the enter key and
the space bar are the only keys you will need after you type your
name and personal information.
Other information about the CPT.
You cannot fail. The assessment is used to evaluate your current
knowledge level for English, reading and mathematics classes.
